Granite City of Eagle River, AK, was founded 11 years ago by current president, Matt Hickey, and vice president/general manager, Barry Anderson. They remain the owners today, along with treasurer, Melissa Hickey. Matt Hickey and Anderson had been working in the construction field for 40 years. They partnered to start the business because they saw a need for a granite fabrication and installation shop in the area.

The company operates a 10,000-square-foot facility, which was remodeled entirely to fit their needs. They manufacture a variety of brands of quartz, as well as natural granite, which is typically used for countertops. They aim to cut and fabricate four to six slabs in an eight-hour shift.

Starting in a barn in Buckingham, FL, Solid Surface Tops of Southwest Florida, Inc. was formed and incorporated in April 2002. The company, founded by Jack and Glenda Balentine, the company president and corporate secretary, respectively, began by only fabricating solid surface materials exclusively.

“After about six months, we moved to a 1,250-square-foot shop on Metro Parkway in Fort Myers, FL,” said Glenda Balentine. “We template, fabricate and install solid surface countertops, most generally Corian, to builders, both new construction and remodeling, and some retail. We soon outgrew that small shop and moved a few blocks away to a 5,000-square-foot space on Idlewild Street.”

Since its beginnings in 2001, Discover Marble & Granite has slowly grown, but since the 2008 recession, it has seen a huge gain due to two reasons. In July 2003, Victor DeOliveira, company president, placed the company’s first order of quartz from Cambria and invested substantially into it. With business picking up, DeOliveira then made the decision to purchase a line-up of state-of-the-art fabrication equipment to establish an efficient production process.

“By 2006, we were moving a lot of material,” said DeOliveira. “We were one of the largest wholesalers of Cambria in the country. It took about two and a half years to get the ball rolling, but since then, it has really taken off for us. We are now known in the industry as a quartz supplier because of that commitment.”

After nearly a decade of stone fabrication, Pinnacle Stone & Tileof Fairfield, CA, made a full investment in digital technology for all aspects of stone processing — from templating and layout to cutting and edging. Currently in the middle of a bounce-back year in terms of new construction work, the company is poised for increased production in the future.

“We do tile installation in addition to natural stone fabrication and installation,” explained Scott Cheeseman, President and CEO of Pinnacle Stone & Tile. “The company was started in 1991 by Corey Phillips, who was a tile installer primarily focused on remodels and local commercial projects. He was asked to do granite fabrication in 2001, and he opened a shop just in time to catch the residential boom of Northern California. When he sold the company to a group of investors in 2006, and the company was predominantly doing tract work.”

Beginning with five workers in Saint Sebastian, Quebec, Canada, in 1988, Lucille Paradis and Rock Bernier have developed Summum Granitinto a model stoneworking facility. The company processes material using the latest generation of technology, and maintaining quality production is a key to its overall strategy.

When Summum Granit opened its doors, it had 4,000 square feet of plant and office space. It steadily grew over the years, adding a second shift in 1997 and undergoing several different plant expansions.

Today, the company has grown to an operation with 140 employees, explained Marie-Pierre Bernier of Summum Granit. In Saint Sebastian, it operates a 55,000-square-foot stoneworking facility and a 10,000-square-foot solid surface shop, with 10,000 square feet of office space.
